Fix the disappearing page number problem in PowerPoint

Slidor

Adding a page number to a layout is an easy step, but there are situations where it disappears and you can't add it automatically anymore. Find out the simple steps to remedy this common footer problem.

How to add the page number on all slides

It is very easy to add a page number to your PowerPoint presentation and it can be useful to give your readers or audience a cue. Here's how to do it:

  1. Open your PowerPoint presentation and select the slide on which you want to add a page number.
  2. Click on "Insert" in the banner at the top of the screen and select "Header and Footer" or "Page Number".
  3. In the window that opens, check "Page number" in the list of available items.
  4. Click "Apply to All" to add the page number to all the slides in your presentation or "Apply" to add the page number only to the selected slide.

My page number does not appear on my slides

This is probably because it has been incorrectly configured or removed from the PowerPoint mask.

This is not supposed to happen on a new presentation but commonly happens on presentations that have been modified by a third party or by software.

Check that the page number is present on the Slide Master

  1. Go to the mask mode of your presentation
  2. Click on "Insert" in the top menu and select "Header and Footer".
  3. Click on ok

Check that the page number is present on all the mask's layouts

Look in each layout of the mask mode (as well as the slide master) if you see the page number placeholder

If not, you have to add it by hand.

  1. Copy the page number placeholder into the slide master
  2. Paste it on each layout (still in mask mode) where it is not present
  3. Now go back to the Normal mode of your presentation
  4. Repeat the first step of the guide and insert your page number again

By following these steps, you should be able to easily add a page number to your PowerPoint presentation. Don't forget to customize the appearance of the page number using the formatting options available to make it fit perfectly into your presentation.
